Best Hikes in Shenandoah for Kids

Below you’ll find some of the best hikes in Shenandoah National Park, not only for families, but also for those who like to tackle less strenuous hikes.

Shenandoah National Park is a great national park for families, as there are a variety of easy and scenic hikes to do.  Its easily accessible (as far as national parks go), and there are tons of kid friendly trails in Shenandoah National Park.  I’ve been to Shenandoah National Park and hiked many of these trails with my son.  Below you’ll find an overview of the best hiking trails in Shenandoah for kids. I’ve tried to include a variety of lengths, and difficultly level, so that all families should be able to find a suitable hike.  If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Shenandoah National Park with kids, then check out our guide here.

The National Park Service rates hikes based on hiking difficulty.  All of the hikes I’ve included are either categorized as easy or moderate. Easy trails are generally good for walking, may have a slight incline, and are generally less than 3 miles.  Moderate hikes are suitable for novice hikers, may have a moderate incline or steeper sections, and are generally 3-5 miles.

Round Trip Hikes: Where I have noted a hike is round trip that generally means that it is an ‘out and back’ hike.

Circuit Hikes: These hikes involve circle or interconnected trails, which means you may end up in a different location than when you started.

ADA Hikes: Any hike that is ADA approved means that it is paved, and can accommodate wheelchairs or strollers.

Track Trails for Kids: Track Trails for Kids is a program done by ‘Kids in Parks’ and it’s a way to engage children with nature.  They provide self-guided brochures, and kids can ‘track’ their hikes in order to win prizes.

The trails are listed below from North to South, and their location along Skyline Dr. is also noted.

1. Fox Hollow Loop:

This trail is categorized as one of the ‘easiest’ hikes in the park. The trail runs through the forest, and through an area formerly inhabited by homesteaders, ane passes by a cemetery.  A self-guided hiking booklet is available.

2. Fort Windham Rocks:

Fort Wind Rocks is a short hike that runs along the Appalachian Trail!  The trail leads to a geologic structure rising 50 feet above the ground.

3. Traces Trail

Traces Trail runs around the Mathews Arm Campground and is named ‘Traces’ because it passes by ‘traces’ of a former mountain settlement.  Through this hike you will encounter elements of natural and cultural history, along with interesting geological sights.

6. Miller’s Head

This is an easier hike, with steep sections, leading to a nice viewpoint.

Honorable Mentions

17. Boundary to Lower Falls Hike

18. South River Falls Trail & South River Fire Road Loop

19. Frazier Discovery Trail Hike

20. Doyles River Falls Trail

21. Turk Mountain Hike
